Server maintenance

We're out of luck!

On EU we had 2 breakages that need maintenance. The CPU cooler started malfunctioning and needs to be replaced.
Also the gpu decided to die. So the downtime will also be used to replace that.

We decided to schedule the downtime for saturday 25 februari at 10 AM CET.

Hopefully it will be brief.

This is not the end!

So I guess most of you have read Zetas's announcement. For those of you who havent: http://darkholdings....allthefish.html In short, Zetas, who has not only been a kick-ass admin on Globalshellz, but who also supported us with many servers, has had to pull the plug. We all feel sorry for him.

What does this mean for Globalshellz? Well, atm it primarily means i have a shitton of work with moving all services to our last stronghold, our old EU server which is hosted by Notepad. All services will move to that one box.

This will also mean that resources are more scarce than they ever were, so we will be monitoring the load, and we might be forced to impose limits on cpu/mem usage later on.

I have also taken the decision to only allow IRC over ipv6 on old EU. We have to be realistic in the fact that we are piggy-backing on Notepad's home connection from now on.

As always, I am present on IRC if you have any questions/suggestions.

New Servers, Expansion, and more!

August is a big month for Global Shellz, we have 3 big expansion projects in the works.

Redundant LDAP Cluster

Loadbalanced LDAP cluster for redundant login availability and increased login speed

New Dev Service and Servers

A new cluster of debian servers for development only, no IRC bots or bouncers allowed. Members that choose this service will be granted access to all programming languages/sdk's, a much larger quota, and more process allowed. Details will be on the wiki soon. Initially you will have to pick one or other (your existing gshellz server with irc or the new cluster with no irc bots or bouncers, though irc clients are allowed) but eventually we may allow senators to use both systems, stay tuned on that one.

New dedicated server for US

The US server is the oldest server in our stable. It's an underpowered vmware slice sitting on my hardware in a colo in atlanta, but our new system is a dedicated box leased from Atlas Networks in Seattle, WA. The server stats will be up on the wiki soon. We hope to have all US members migrated to this server this weekend, we will launch early next week hopefully with minimal downtime.

Thanks,

MUD Project

As some of you know, we have recently started building a MUD. After alot of trying out we decided to go with the Dead Souls LPMudLib. Since we are building up a world from scratch, the MUD is still under heavy construction, but it is already playable.

For those interested in the MUD, there is a new subforum for all MUD-related talk: http://www.globalshe...g/forum/25-mud/
We also have a side-channel on freenode, #gshellz-mud. Feel free to join any time.

Downtime

We are going to bring the US server down for maintenance today at 11AM EST. This is to facilitate a full sync of users data to the EU server as well as an upgrade to the US servers operating system. We expect the downtime to last no longer than 2 hours, but in reality it should be much quicker. We've done everything we can without actually taking the server down.

I know we initially planned on taking the US server down after the EU server was up and running but we would have had to put the US server in maintenance mode (no ssh logins) anyway to facilitate a full and accurate sync of data (cant have people writing to files as we copy them) and we figured we might as well kill two birds with one stone.

This is the quarter of updates! I'm just giving everyone a heads up, the wiki has been updated to the latest version, we skipped quite a few in between. I hope to do security updates on a quicker bases but we are pretty swamped with everything else that needs to be done.

European Server Update 3/11/11

Native IPv6 is finally working, we are still trying to work out ipv6 vhosts but i dont think we are going to wait for that before we open access to users. Brabo and I kinda have the feeling we are some of the first users to be on the native ipv6 network at leaseweb given how they've handled our support requests so we dont want to rock the boat just yet. We will be working today and this weekend to get the rest of the shit up and running and hopefully open the server up to our EU users. Excited!

I'm not sure how many of you use the webmail, but for those of you that do, i am upgrading it to the latest version to patch some pretty large security holes that exist in our version. This wont affect much, but it will mean the pretty theme that we have will go away, it will be back to the old school squirrelmail theme.

New European Server

As most of you know, our EU server was hosted in a private residence in Sweden. Anyone that was on that server can attest that this setup was far from ideal, there are reasons you put servers in a datacenter, most notably: reliability. No accidental power button pushes or otherwise uncontrollable power outages, no internet issues, etc. Since the beginning we have toyed with the idea of purchasing/leasing a server somewhere in the European Union to replace this setup. Due to a lack of time and mostly money we have been for a long time unable to accomplish this goal until recently.

During the recent EU outage related to the owner moving it became clear we would need to seek alternatives. The original server was very graciously donated to our cause but, as the issues we've had with the increased capacity on the US server as an indicator, we have since grown large enough to require a more stable European presence.

I present to you all SR2, our newest server hosted in Amsterdam for us by Leaseweb. This baby boasts dual quad core xeon cpu's with 4gb of memory, enough for us to grow quite a bit before a hardware upgrade is required. The max latency to our other EU systems has capped around 40-50ms so it should be nice and snappy for our users. Even to the US it's little more than 100ms which is really the best you can expect when crossing oceans (and in some cases, atmospheres).

Brabo and I have been working diligently since the "keys" for the server we're handed to us late last week. We've finally got Debian Wheezy installed and running successfully with the grsec kernel and now all that's left is to install our package requirements and get it configured to be added to the rotation. We don't yet have an ETA on its availability due to the fact we are still waiting on Leaseweb for some minor networking setup related to ipv6.

For those of you on the US server (by choice) this means that when the EU server is up and running and available for everyone and has been stable for at least a week we will taking down the US server for upgrades. As you may have read, the EU server is running wheezy, this needs to be the case on US as well and we don't do dist upgrades without a reboot :) We estimate the upgrade and reboot should take no more than a few hours. The EU server will be available during that time for your use.

Please feel free to ask us any questions you may have in IRC or as a comment to this post.

Thanks,
